iPhone Duo screenshots: sizes, the April 2027 deadline and what to upload

iPhone Duo needs two screenshot sets of its own. The outer display is 1398 × 2034 pixels in portrait and 2034 × 1398 in landscape; the inner display is 2007 × 2853 portrait and 2853 × 2007 landscape. Both numbers come from Apple's screenshot specifications page, fetched 29 October 2026. The shots are optional today, and Apple says they become required in April 2027 for apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later.

iPhone Duo screenshot sizes

Apple lists iPhone Duo as one device size with two displays, each with its own pixel dimensions. You upload portrait or landscape, and each file must match one of the listed pixel sizes exactly. Here are the four sizes from Apple's screenshot specifications, fetched 29 October 2026.

Display Portrait Landscape
Outer display 1398 × 2034 2034 × 1398
Inner display 2007 × 2853 2853 × 2007

If you already have a folder of exports and want to know which slot each file fits, our App Store screenshot size checker reads the folder in the browser, matches every file to a slot — iPhone Duo included — and marks the ones that are off by a pixel or carry an alpha channel.

When iPhone Duo screenshots become required

Not yet, and then all at once for anyone on the new SDK. Apple's page says: "Starting in April 2027, screenshots will be required for any app using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later." Until that date the set is optional. Submitting it early has a visible payoff on your product page rather than a compliance one.

Apple describes the payoff in one line: "When you submit iPhone Duo screenshots in App Store Connect, your App Store product page will display a badge to let people know your app is optimized for iPhone Duo."

So the deadline splits developers into two groups. If you stay on an older SDK past April 2027, nothing forces your hand. If you build against the iOS 27.1 SDK or later the screenshots stop being a choice. Doing the art once, now, means the April 2027 release is a normal release.

What is required today

Today App Store Connect asks for very little. Apple's page states it plainly: "To submit your app, you must provide screenshots for the following required display sizes: iPhone: At least one screenshot for iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display). iPad (if your app supports iPadOS): At least one screenshot for iPad 13-inch display." Everything else, iPhone Duo included, is optional.

That required iPhone slot is worth reading twice. As of 29 October 2026, Apple's page names "iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display)" as the required iPhone set — not the largest iPhone size. Plenty of guides still teach 1320 × 2868 as the one set you need. That size now sits in the large-display family, which Apple's page does not list as required.

The two Dynamic Island families and the devices Apple lists for each:

Family Portrait sizes Landscape sizes Devices Apple lists
iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display) 1179 × 2556, 1206 × 2622 2556 × 1179, 2622 × 1206 iPhone 18 Pro, 17 Pro, 17, 16 Pro, 16, 15 Pro, 15, 14 Pro
iPhone with Dynamic Island (large display) 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, 1320 × 2868 2736 × 1260, 2796 × 1290, 2868 × 1320 iPhone Air, 18 Pro Max, 17 Pro Max, 16 Pro Max, 16 Plus, 15 Pro Max, 15 Plus, 14 Pro Max

Apple also scales art down for you within a family: "If your app's user interface is consistent across multiple device sizes and localizations, you only need to provide screenshots for the highest required resolution. App Store Connect automatically scales them down for smaller device sizes." iPhone Duo's two displays are shaped differently from every other iPhone size, so that scaling cannot cover them.

Making screenshots that fit the inner and outer displays

The two Duo displays are shaped nothing like a normal iPhone shot, so you cannot stretch an existing export into the slot. Work out the ratios from Apple's own numbers: the inner display is 2853 ÷ 2007 ≈ 1.42:1, the outer is 2034 ÷ 1398 ≈ 1.45:1, and a medium-display iPhone shot is 2622 ÷ 1206 ≈ 2.17:1. A 2.17:1 image forced into a 1.42:1 frame either crops about a third of the screen away or distorts every straight line in it.

You have two honest routes.

Build the layout. Run your app on iPhone Duo with Xcode 27.1 and capture each display there. Apple's iPhone Duo developer page collects the design and layout videos, the workshops and the Human Interface Guidelines for the device, and says: "Get the latest SDKs to build, run, and test your app for iPhone Duo." This route shows your app as it really looks on the device.

Pad what you have. Place a tall capture on a canvas of the exact Duo pixel size, over a solid background from your own palette. Wider frames give you room beside the device rather than only above it, so captions can sit to one side. Keep the background opaque — Apple's rule is blunt: "Images can't include alpha channels or transparencies." Our screenshot checker exports padded or flattened copies for exactly this case.

Whichever route you take, make the first frame carry the promise on its own. The words you use there are worth checking against the fields in our App Store character limits tool and in our guide to App Store keyword field practice.

Checklist before you upload

Six things, each of which App Store Connect or a reviewer will otherwise catch for you. Apple allows "at least one screenshot and can upload up to 10 screenshots per device size in .jpeg, .jpg, or .png formats", bans alpha channels, and treats each display as its own slot. Run the list before you open the upload panel.

  • Export PNG or JPEG. No other format is accepted.
  • Flatten every file. No alpha channel, no transparency anywhere in the image.
  • Check pixel sizes one file at a time: 1398 × 2034 or 2034 × 1398 for the outer display, 2007 × 2853 or 2853 × 2007 for the inner.
  • Decide whether you want one display or both. If you want both, make a full set for each — they are separate slots, not alternates.
  • Keep each set to 10 images or fewer, and at least one.
  • Confirm the required slots are still filled: one iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display) shot, and one iPad 13-inch display shot if your app supports iPadOS.

Then run the folder through our screenshot size checker once more, after any resize or re-export.

Questions

Do I need iPhone Duo screenshots now?

No. Apple's page says screenshots "will be required for any app using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later" starting in April 2027. Before then they are optional, and submitting them makes your product page show the iPhone Duo badge.

Can App Store Connect scale my other iPhone screenshots to iPhone Duo?

Apple's page describes scaling within its display-size families — "you only need to provide screenshots for the highest required resolution. App Store Connect automatically scales them down for smaller device sizes." It does not say iPhone Duo screenshots are generated from other sizes. If you want the badge, supply the Duo files yourself.

How many iPhone Duo screenshots can I upload?

Up to 10 per device size, with at least one required once the slot applies to you. Files must be .jpeg, .jpg or .png, and cannot include alpha channels or transparencies.

Which single iPhone set does Apple require if I make only one?

As of 29 October 2026, Apple's screenshot specifications page names "iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display)" — 1179 × 2556 or 1206 × 2622 in portrait. The larger 1320 × 2868 set sits in the optional large-display family.

Do I still need an iPad screenshot?

Only if your app supports iPadOS. Then Apple requires "at least one screenshot for iPad 13-inch display" to submit.
